NYC Showtime Mascara – put a show everyday!

This is an excellent mascara. It provides volume and length and is a great everyday mascara, despite its theatrical title.

If you want a little bit of glam everyday, then this is the mascara for you.And considering its price point. 1.99, this one is a no brainer .Again I hear myself saying that this mascara is worth at least ten times its price.

What my reviews prove is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a great mascara. They are out there and you don’t have to get out your credit card to buy them. This one is just pocket change; but don’t discount it.  For less than two pounds this mascara is a strong contender for the best list.

Lancome Hypnose mascara review

Ok, recently I have been on a mission to review many mascaras that have received attention in the media and some that I have found to be popular without the hype. I trailed the review section for hours or research on the Superdrug wesite to find mascaras that have received a 5 star review with the public, and pitched them against some bigger named brands to see what the results were and see what really is value for money.

Lancome Hypnose is around the £22 pound mark here in Britain. A little pricey some would say, but others might consider it mid range. Whatever you viewpoint, this mascara is nice and performed well. I test with and without an eyelash primer. Without the primer it was ok but with the primer it performed much better. However that does seem to be the case for most mascaras.

To me this mascaras lengthened and added a little volume. I would keep it because it really performed well on my bottom lashes and as I have a few missing on one eye, this has really become a standard test for me. Apart from that it did not dramatically add volume.

If you are looking for a mascara to fill in sparse areas and lengthen your lashes then is a mascara for you. If you are looking for volume, then perhaps another brand would be better.

This Hypnose mascara did not perform better than my drug store brand collection 2000 mascara so I would rather pay £4 than £22. If I could not get hold of my regular brand, this is definitely an alternative.

What every woman should know about makeup

Every pound, euro of dollar that you spend on cosmetics probably ends up in the pockets of either one or two companies. Think that it crazy! Is your foundation by Bobbi Brown and your blush by Lancome? Is your mascara by Estee Lauder but your eyes shadow by Urban Decay? Is you lipstick by Clinique, but your bronzer by YvesSantLaurent ?

Well think again!

Only one or two of them were a surprise to me. But I guess if a new brand starts making in roads into your market, what better way to get rid of the competition than to buy it up, and add it to your portfolio. As I concentrate on make-up I skipped over the fragrance and luxury handbags stuff. But you get the point.

So next time Maybeline bring out their next awesome mascara ( and lets face it, they have a few) why not wonder if it is so great, then why does Lancome need another version of Hypnose mascara to compete with it. And when Urban Decay launch another Naked pallet, will you wonder if it would just be cheaper to pick out a few brown shades from the L’oreal range.

Marketing is a wonderful thing, but knowledge is power. It is true some of these brands differ dramatically in what they offer the consumer. But next time you are seduced by the next big thing, think about where it is originating from, and whether it really is for you.

Love at First Kiss Lipstick

This is a collection from Laura Geller that I bought at the tail end of last year. Why? Because they are beautiful coral based lipsticks that will suit anyone. They range from pinky toffee based tones too bright orange tones.

Love at First Kiss

I have only managed to swatch five on my arm, but as you can see they are very forgiving lipsticks. They work out at around the £6 when I include postage and packaging, for a quality products that is more than reasonable. Also it takes the guess work out of choosing lipsticks for my kit.

Laura Geller, make some great lipsticks and I was very lucky to have snapped these up. The only problem I do have with some of these collections, is that it is often hard, if not impossible, to find the individual colours on sale on their own. But that is often the case with makeup collections.

I have also managed to get a set in vibrant red tones for a Hollywood look, I will feature those at another time.

Have fun playing with makeup, and if you fancy a makeover, just call or email me.

Foundation Pyjama Games; Foundations you can take a nap in

This is really a review of Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24 hour. I wanted to recommend it as an alternative to the very good Estee Lauder Double Wear. I use both of these products and can vouch for their staying power.

But first I want to address the chatter that went on in forums last year about Double Wear. Many people claimed that Estee Lauder changed the formulation of their foundation. In America, rumour had it that the change was prompted by American FDA regulations regarding sunscreen declarations, or some such nonsense. I have not verified that, I am just reporting on what has been said.

Either way, Estee Lauder does seem to have had an overhaul of foundations and now there are new shades in double wear light. I am keen to try the double wear light because the packaging and the product information looks a lot like the old demi matt that they had on sale in the 90’s.

Getting back to Lancome, I would like to recommend Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24 hour, as an alternative foundation.

This is a great product that comes in a glass bottle with a pump dispenser, and it does have remarkable staying power. I personally have taken a nap in this foundation and it is still on my face.

It is an oil free formulation, similar to the original Double Wear, and feels incredibly light on the face. So if you are looking for a foundation with real staying power, why not try Lancome Teint Idol Ultra 24 H

A quick makeover challenge

If there was ever a difficult client, then it would be myself. I like to think of myself as a time served Make-up Artist, but I have been ill for sometime, a disc herniation at the L5 S1 area, means that I have been living on pain meds for months, and that takes its toll. The last thing I want to do is to put on makeup, but today I gave myself a challenge.  How quickly could I get ready to go out?

Allison bare faced                  makeover

It was 3.12pm when I started and 3.39pm when finished.

I started with Liz Earle Superskin Moisturizer and added a touch of a Gatineau anti-wrinkle formula. I then used Garnier roll on to lighten under the eye and on the eyelids. For foundation I used Lancome Tient Idole Ultra 24hr, but underneath I used a No 7 concealer crayon where needed..

Moving onto the eyes, I used the lightest shade I could get from my Laura Geller Balance and Brighten Foundation compact all over the eyelid. I then used Revlon matte eyeshadow in rich sable. I placed some on my outer eyelids and blended the colour over the crease stopping short of under the brow. I used some of the mid tone colours in my Balance and Brighten foundation in the inner corner of the eye crease and blended a little with the rich sable eyeshadow. To highlight just under the brow, I used some of my No 7 concealer crayon. To darken the eyebrow I used YBF brow liner and also filled in using the Laura Geller babycakes brown.

Under the eye I used the Babycakes eyeliner palette to line my eye in a rich chocolate colour. I then grabbed my trusted Boots eyelash curlers and gave my lashes a good curl. I then used my Estee Lauder lash primer and finished with one coat of Collection 2000 Lash Multiplier mascara.

I then took my Balance and Brighten and did some very quick contouring of the face..

Reaching for the first lip pencil that I could find, I took Foxglove from Liz Earle and filled in my lip area. This is the first time I have used this particular pencil in this way and I won’t be doing so again as it is very drying. I had also used some Gayle Hayman lip lift on my lips, so they were far from dry to begin with. I finished off with Liz Earle lipstick in Rosewood.

For blush I used the Collection 2000 Shimmer Shades, using a sweep of all four shades. As I had only just reviewed them, I thought it would work with the lip tone.

Some of the mess I left behind

After the makeover

My maths is not that good, but 33 minutes is a reasonable about of time for a quick makeover. And I would like to point out that the photos were taken on an iphone by myself and there is no Photoshop involved. But I do like to remain a safe distance from the camera, and that applies at all times. ,

What happens when your favourite lipstick is discontinued.

So here begins the lipstick dramas. My ID Bare Escenutuals lip palette runs out of my favoutie colours. I love this palette. And Bare Minerals, as they now like to be known, don’t seem to have a dupe. I tried.

Lip colour palette well used

I bought these two lipsticks thinking from the on screen shot at barereminerals.co.uk  thinking they would be a good substitute. I knew I was taking a gamble, as they don’t accept returns for wrong colour choice, but they looked a pretty good match on screen. The colours are Parfait and Spiced Raisin. Spiced Raisin is the darker of the two. I think I would use the Parfait lipstick but the spiced raisin is really too dark for my skin tone.

Parfait and Spiced Raisin lipstick

Lipstick colour swatch

I put the lipsticks away thinking I would use the lighter of the two, (I actually put them back in the jiffy bag they came from and left them in a cool place, on a north facing window sill that gets no direct light,)but on returning to the package some two weeks later, I noticed these beads of what can only be called, wax deposits. Almost like a crayon had sweat. I used the Parfait lipstick on my lips and it tasted like a wax crayon and smelt like a candle.

030

I paid £14 plus P&P for these lipsticks. I remember it wasn’t an easy transaction because their web site was playing up, and I tried to place the order over the phone only to be told that they didn’t take telephone orders. I nearly gave up, but my desire to have the right lipstick shade in my makeup bag just got the better of me. What women will do in the name of beauty!

As my husband is an IT consultant as well as a photographer, I got him to locate the error on their website and he made a note of it to show them the problem. When I told them this, the response of the lady on the telephone was to send it to them by email and they would get their IT department to “look at it for you.” At this point my attitude was that actually  we were notifying them of a fault that could lose them money and she had just made it sound like they were doing me a favour. So needless to say no email was sent.

As our American cousins would say, all this just kind of “sucks.”  I went to a lot of trouble to find a duplicate of my favourite colours and it seems like I have ended up with a waxy poor substitute. I  did think of ordering the two lighter colours in this range. In fact I went to Debenhams to see if I could find them, but there was no assistant on the counter, and try as I might, I could not find these lipsticks, just the Moxie range. I do understand this range contains wax, but honestly, this lipstick tastes like some cheap lippy from the 80’s.

Usually at this point I would just through them away, but after I had gone to so much trouble, and I do in fact like the brand, despite some issues, I thought I would give them a call about the waxy build up. It was Saturday, in peak Christmas buying season and their website had no support. I called the number on their website and I was given a recorded message that their office hours were Monday to Friday. I don’t really have a lot else to add really. Perhaps I will call Monday or  perhaps I should just use another brand.

Balance and Brighten – A Foundation by Laura Geller

I am a big fan of QVC cosmetic shopping due to having a very sensitive skin, after all there are not many places where you can try a cosmetic product or skin care product for thirty days and then return it for a refund.

One of their brands is Laura Geller cosmetics. And I just love their baked formulas. It would be fair to say that Laura Geller’s baked formulas were available in the UK through QVC long before I saw any similar brands on the high street.

Balance and Brighten Foundation

Mouse Foundation Baked to a powder

The Balance and Brighten foundation starts its life as a mouse and then bakes to a powder consistency.  It is sold as a foundation product but unless you have a pretty good skin to start with, it would be best to use over a beauty balm or light weight foundation. To use you just swirl around the product with the retractable brush and buff over the skin. It instantly warms the complexion.

As the pan contains a mix of colours from its originally mouse consistency it really is one of the most versatile products I have ever come across.  I can use the Balance and Brighten formula as a contour product, a bronzer, an eyeshadow or even as a highlighter. To do this I just dip a brush into one of the many colours in the palette to achieve the desired effect.

What I most like about the product is that it is made in Italy. I just love products that are either made in  Europe or  the United State. I think quality control is much easier to handle in these regions. The next best thing is to have a formulation developed in the West and then manufactured under license in the Far East.

What I really do not like, and try to avoid at all costs, is to buy private label products that have not been developed in a controlled region like Europe or the States. Products which are developed cheaply in China and then shipped by the container load to the West concern me greatly. So I just love that Laura Geller champions the fact that her baked products are made in Italy.

Lancome Teint Miracle, the perfecting concealing pen

This is a must have product. The concealing pen has light reflecting capabilities which help sculpt the face.

Lancome concealing highlight pen

One of the best concealing and highlight makeup pens

A small application along the nasal labia area gives a lift to the face. It is equally useful to add a touch down the centre of the nose and run along brow furrows. My favourite application is just beneath the eyebrows. A light touch under  the eyebrows gives instant lift to the eyes. But you don’t have to leave it there. You can add a touch of colour to the highlight with gentle sweeps of highlighting eyeshadow.

All in all this makeup product is great for multitasking, the brush on application makes using this highlight and concealer an absolute dream.

A Blush for All Seasons

This Collection 2000 blush quad is great. Use the individual pigments or take a sweep of all four colours and mix it up a bit.

Although entitled Shimmer Shades, I could not detect much of a shimmer when I used it. And for me that is fine, I am not a great fan of shimmery blushers in makeup.

I am a big fan of the Collection 2000 range of cosmetics, their mascara is my favourite of all the mascaras that I have tried, and believe me, I have used a lot. So when I saw this blush quad in boots I was going to give it a whirl. After I bought the blusher set, I saw that Lisa Eldrige had used the very same blush in one of her tutorials. Like me she decided to mix the shades.

If you are looking for a versatile blusher, then look no further. The pay-off is great. The pigmentation is just right, and the price is very low.
